What Is an Alcohol-Free Perfume — and Why Does It Matter?
When most people think of perfume, they think of that familiar sharp spritz — the one that fills a room instantly and fades within a few hours. What they're smelling, more often than not, is mostly alcohol.
At Aromatic Treasures, we do things differently. Our perfumes contain no alcohol at all. Here's what that means, why we made that choice, and what it means for you.
What's Actually in a Conventional Perfume?
A standard eau de parfum or eau de toilette is typically 70–85% alcohol (ethanol). The fragrance compounds — the actual scent — make up anywhere from 5% to 20% of the formula. The rest is water and fixatives.
Alcohol serves a purpose: it disperses the scent quickly, projects it into the air, and evaporates fast so the fragrance "blooms" on the skin. But it also brings drawbacks that are rarely talked about.
The Problem with Alcohol in Perfume
It dries out your skin. Ethanol is a solvent. Applied repeatedly to skin — especially sensitive or dry skin — it disrupts the skin's natural moisture barrier and strips away natural oils.
It fades fast. Because alcohol evaporates quickly, it takes much of the fragrance with it. The initial projection is strong, but longevity suffers — especially the deeper base notes that give a scent its character.
It can irritate. For people with sensitive skin, rosacea, or eczema, alcohol-based products can cause redness, tightness, or a burning sensation.
It's not always what it seems. Many "natural" or "clean" perfumes still use denatured alcohol — ethanol treated with additives to make it undrinkable. It's still alcohol, with all the same effects.
So What Is an Alcohol-Free Perfume?
An alcohol-free perfume uses a carrier — typically a plant-based oil — instead of alcohol as its base. The essential oils or fragrance compounds are dissolved directly into the carrier oil, which is then applied to the skin.
At Aromatic Treasures, we use one carrier: Golden Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil) — a liquid wax, not a true oil, that is exceptionally stable, non-comedogenic, and remarkably close in composition to the skin's own sebum. Its warm golden colour and rich feel make it an ideal base for a premium perfume oil. It doesn't compete with the fragrance — it carries it.
How Does It Perform Differently?
Longevity. Oil-based perfumes last significantly longer on skin than alcohol-based ones. Because the carrier doesn't evaporate, the scent is released gradually as your skin warms the oil throughout the day. Many people find a single application lasts 6–8 hours or more.
Sillage (projection). Oil perfumes sit closer to the skin — they're more intimate, less room-filling. This is a feature, not a flaw. The scent is discovered up close, not announced from across the room. For many wearers, this is exactly the effect they want.
Skin feel. Rather than leaving skin feeling tight or dry, an oil-based perfume leaves a subtle softness. The carrier oil itself is nourishing.
Scent development. Without alcohol to blast the top notes open all at once, an oil perfume unfolds more slowly and naturally on the skin — revealing its layers over time rather than all at once.
Our Scent: The Permanence Of Warmth
Our perfume oil — The Permanence Of Warmth — is built around a core of Frankincense (Boswellia Serrata) and Myrrh (Commiphora Myrrha): two of the oldest and most revered aromatic resins in the world. Deep, warm, slightly smoky, with a quiet spiritual weight.
From there, three blends take the scent in different directions:
- Classic — Frankincense, Myrrh, and Himalayan Cedarwood. Grounded, woody, timeless.
- Summer — Frankincense, Myrrh, and Vanilla. Warmer, softer, more approachable.
- Luxury — Frankincense, Myrrh, Cedarwood, and Mysore Sandalwood. The richest, most complex expression of the formula.
Each blend is available in your choice of application type — roll-on for precision, dropper for layering and control.
Who Is Alcohol-Free Perfume For?
Honestly — most people. But especially:

A Final Note on "Natural Fragrance"
Not all alcohol-free perfumes are created equal. Some use synthetic fragrance compounds in a carrier oil — which is still alcohol-free, but not natural. Our perfumes use only pure essential oils: no synthetic fragrance, no phthalates, no mystery ingredients.
