How to Choose the Right Castile Soap for Your Skin Type
How to Choose the Right Castile Soap for Your Skin Type
So you've decided to make the switch to castile soap. Good decision. But now you're looking at a range of blends — olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, combinations of all three — and wondering which one is actually right for you.
Here's a straightforward guide.
Start With Your Skin Type
Sensitive or Reactive Skin
Best choice: Organic Olive Oil Castile Liquid Soap
Pure olive oil soap is the gentlest formula we make. Olive oil is rich in oleic acid — a fatty acid that closely mirrors the skin's own natural oils. It cleanses without disrupting the moisture barrier, making it ideal for skin that reacts to almost everything else.
If you have eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, or skin that turns red or tight after washing, start here.
Dry or Dehydrated Skin
Best choice: Olive Oil & Shea Butter or Unscented Shea Butter Castile Liquid Soap
Shea butter adds stearic and oleic acids to the formula — both deeply nourishing and conditioning. Soaps with shea butter leave a subtle softness on the skin that pure olive oil soaps don't quite match.
The Unscented Shea Butter formula is also ideal if you're fragrance-sensitive or prefer a completely neutral scent profile.
Normal or Combination Skin
Best choice: Olive & Coconut Oil or Castile Soap with Olive, Coconut Oil & Shea Butter
These balanced blends give you the gentleness of olive oil with the lather and cleansing power of coconut oil. The triple-oil formula (olive + coconut + shea) is our richest and most moisturising — a good all-rounder for most skin types.
Oily Skin or Preference for Strong Lather
Best choice: Pure Coconut Oil or Olive & Coconut Oil Castile Liquid Soap
Coconut oil is high in lauric acid, which produces abundant lather and strong cleansing action. It's more effective at cutting through excess sebum than olive-oil-dominant formulas.
Pure coconut oil soap is the most cleansing formula we offer — excellent for oily skin, or for use as a hand soap where you want maximum lather and clean.
Fragrance-Free Preference
Best choice: Unscented Shea Butter Castile Liquid Soap
All our soaps are free from synthetic fragrance. But if you want zero scent of any kind — no essential oils, no natural fragrance — the Unscented Shea Butter formula is your answer.
A Quick Reference
| Skin Type | Recommended Formula |
|---|---|
| Sensitive / Reactive | Organic Olive Oil |
| Dry / Dehydrated | Olive Oil & Shea Butter or Unscented Shea Butter |
| Normal / Combination | Olive & Coconut Oil or Triple Oil (Olive + Coconut + Shea) |
| Oily / Needs strong lather | Pure Coconut Oil or Olive & Coconut Oil |
| Fragrance-free | Unscented Shea Butter |
What If You're Not Sure?
Start with the Olive & Coconut Oil blend. It's the most versatile formula — gentle enough for most skin types, with enough lather to feel satisfying. If you find it too stripping, move toward more olive oil or shea. If you want more lather, move toward more coconut oil.
You can also use different soaps for different purposes — a coconut-oil formula for hand washing, an olive-oil formula for face and body.
One More Thing: Hard Water
If you live in an area with hard water (common across much of Europe), you may notice a slight film after washing with any natural soap. This is a mineral reaction, not a product flaw. A quick rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar — or simply rinsing thoroughly — resolves it completely.
