Walk into any supermarket and you'll find dozens of liquid soaps. Most of them aren't soap at all.
That's not a marketing claim — it's chemistry. The majority of products labelled "hand wash" or "body wash" are synthetic detergent formulations, not true soap. Understanding the difference matters more than most people realise, especially if you have sensitive skin or care about what you're putting on your body every day.
What Makes Something "Real" Soap?
True soap is made through a chemical reaction called saponification — combining oils or fats with an alkali (lye). The result is a genuine soap molecule: a compound with one end that attracts water and one end that attracts oil, which is what gives soap its cleansing ability.
By legal definition in many countries, a product can only be called "soap" if it's made this way. If it's made from synthetic surfactants, it must be labelled as a cosmetic or detergent — which is why you'll see terms like "cleansing bar", "beauty bar", or "moisturising wash" on products that look like soap but aren't.
What Is Castile Soap Specifically?
Castile soap is a type of true soap made exclusively — or predominantly — from plant-based oils, with no animal fats. The name comes from the Castile region of Spain, where olive oil soap has been made for centuries.
Traditional castile soap is pure olive oil soap. Modern castile soap often blends olive oil with other plant oils — coconut, shea butter, hemp — to adjust lather, hardness, and skin feel. But the defining characteristic remains: plant oils only, saponified with lye, nothing synthetic.
What's in Regular Commercial Soap?
Most commercial liquid soaps and body washes are built around synthetic surfactants — the most common being:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) — powerful detergents that create abundant lather but are known to strip the skin's natural oils and disrupt the moisture barrier
- Cocamidopropyl Betaine — a synthetic surfactant derived from coconut oil, often used to soften the harshness of SLS
- Preservatives like parabens or phenoxyethanol to extend shelf life
- Synthetic fragrance — a catch-all term that can represent dozens of undisclosed chemical compounds
These ingredients are not inherently dangerous in small doses, but their cumulative daily use — especially SLS — is associated with skin dryness, irritation, and barrier disruption over time.
The Glycerin Difference
One of the most significant differences between true castile soap and commercial alternatives is glycerin.
Glycerin is a natural byproduct of saponification — it's produced every time oils are turned into soap. It's a powerful humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the air to the skin. In handcrafted castile soap, glycerin stays in the final product.
In commercial soap manufacturing, glycerin is typically extracted and sold separately — it's a valuable cosmetic ingredient. What's left is a more stripping, less moisturising product. Manufacturers then add synthetic moisturisers back in to compensate.
With castile soap, the glycerin was never removed. It's simply there, doing its job.
How They Feel — and What Your Skin Actually Experiences
The difference becomes clear within the first week of switching.
Commercial soap/body wash:
- Strong initial lather
- Skin often feels "squeaky clean" — which is actually a sign of over-stripping
- Tightness or dryness after washing, especially in winter
- Fragrance lingers but fades quickly
Castile liquid soap:
- Gentler, creamier lather (especially olive-oil-heavy formulas)
- Skin feels clean but not stripped — the moisture barrier stays intact
- No tightness; some formulas leave a subtle softness from retained glycerin
- Scent, if any, comes from essential oils — not synthetic fragrance
For people with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or generally reactive skin, the switch to castile soap is often transformative.
What About Lather?
Many people associate lather with cleansing power. This is a misconception — lather is largely cosmetic. Synthetic surfactants like SLS produce abundant foam precisely because consumers expect it, not because it cleans better.
Castile soap — particularly olive-oil-heavy formulas — produces a creamier, less voluminous lather. Coconut oil in the formula increases bubbles significantly. Our blends are formulated to balance both: enough lather to feel satisfying, enough olive oil to stay gentle.
Is Castile Soap Right for Everyone?
Almost. A few things to know:
- Hard water can react with the fatty acids in castile soap to leave a white film on skin or surfaces. This is a mineral deposit, not a soap residue — a small splash of diluted apple cider vinegar as a rinse solves it completely.
- Very oily skin may prefer a coconut-oil-heavy formula for stronger cleansing action.
- Very dry or sensitive skin does best with olive-oil or shea-butter-dominant formulas.
The Bottom Line
If the label doesn't say "soap" — if it says "cleansing gel", "body wash", or "beauty bar" — it almost certainly isn't soap in the traditional sense. It's a detergent formulation designed to mimic soap's function while being cheaper to produce at scale.
Castile soap is the real thing. Plant oils, lye, water, and time. No shortcuts, no synthetic fillers, no extracted glycerin.
